Stop, T.H.I.N.K, Pray, Speak!

by Laura Reese

Raise your hand if you have been ever been guilty of gossiping, backbiting or lying! While I am not serious about you literally raising your hand, every single one of us have been guilty of harmful speech. We all love to talk, right? Most of us talk a lot, perhaps even more than we should! However, speech is not a bad thing. It is a wonderful gift God has given to us in order to communicate with others. Surprisingly, God uses language as the primary way for people to share the Gospel message!

As you can see, speech can be good or bad, helpful or harmful. It all depends on how people use language. Ephesians 4:29 says, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”

Unfortunately, many of us speak first and think later. Yet, words are powerful and can never be erased. Words can only be forgiven, not forgotten. Next time before you jump headfirst into the conversation, stop and T.H.I.N.K. about your words. Try asking yourself these questions provided by Lee Colan, T.-is it true? H.-is it helpful? I.-is it inspiring? N.-is it necessary? K.-is it kind?.

If right speech is something you struggle with, pray and ask Jesus to help you! The Psalmist said, “Set a guard over my mouth, LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips” (Psalm 141:3). Jesus will be faithful to guide you into speech that will be uplifting, encouraging and glorifying to God!
